JoinHyde900 is a community-based organisation – set up originally to commemorate the 900th anniversary of Hyde Abbey – which investigates and celebrates the history, architecture, environment and talents of Hyde, inspired by its unique location as the final resting place of King Alfred the Great. Hyde900’s mission is to bring to light the rich heritage of Hyde as well as its contemporary talents, in an entertaining and informative way, including exhibitions, displays, talks, music series, poetry readings and commemorations, as well as social and sporting events. It has an ongoing research project into the site and remains of Hyde Abbey, has published books, and has been involved in TV programs. It holds an annual festival – the King Alfred Weekend – at the end of October. Overall, Hyde900 aims to give residents and visitors a better understanding and appreciation of this area of Winchester where so much of interest lies just below the surface.
