6.00 PM King Alfred Weekend Launch Event

Welcome by the Revd Karen Kousseff, Rector, St Bartholomew’s Church.

David Spurling (Hyde900 Trustee) will then talk about the 2021 community dig – Challenges, opportunities for the future and finds.

6.15 PM The King Alfred Lecture, Professor Martin Biddle will deliver a talk entitled ‘Eureka Moments’.

The definition of an Eureka Moment is ‘A moment of sudden, triumphant discovery, inspiration, or insight’. Martín writes ‘I’ve been very lucky in a long career to encounter several such moments. At Nonsuch in England as a schoolboy in 1955; at Winchester in the very first trench north of the cathedral in 1962; at London in 1972 sitting in the front seat on top of a London bus driving along the Strand and at Jerusalem in the 1985 faced with the challenge of trying to comprehend the archaeology of the Tomb of Christ. I will try in my talk to illustrate something of the nature and outcome of such moments.

Please join us for a glass of wine after the talk and the official launch of ‘Excavations at Hyde Abbey 1972-1999’ edited by Patrick Ottaway, written by Ken Qualman, Graham Scobie, and John Zant, with support and contribution from David Spurling and Hyde900. This is the latest volume of the integrated series published by Hampshire Cultural Trust with the support from Historic England about the excavations overseen by Winchester City Council’s excavation unit. This comprehensive and fascinating publication will be on sale together with other HYDE900 publications.
