Scotty was born in Penang, Malaysia, and was educated at Badminton School, Bristol. After graduating from Bedford College, Cambridge, she got a flat in Winchester and a job at Toynbee School in Eastleigh where, over 40 years, she worked her way from PE and English to Pastoral Care, finally becoming Assistant Head with a remit for Special Educational Needs & Disability, Inclusion and Pastoral Care.

Scotty has been lucky enough to live in Winchester for 46 years, the last 40 of which have been in Hyde.

She retired in 2013 and in 2014, in the company of four others, she founded Empathy Lab. It is the first organisation to build children’s empathy, literacy and social activism through a systematic use of high-quality literature. Their strategy builds on new scientific evidence showing the power of reading to build real-life empathy skills. Empathy Lab believes that empathy is a beacon of hope in a divided world.
