The first Hyde900 cricket competition, a pairs event on 28th June, saw Ben Robbins of the King Alfred Pub and Graham Barrett of Monks Road triumph with a score of 50 after 70 runs and 2 outs.

Start of play on the North Walls Recreation Ground pitch was delayed slightly by morning rain but brisk competition was soon underway between batsman pairs drawn from the renowned Scrummagers Team, and King Alfred Pub Eleven. A tense finish saw Ben and Graham grasp victory in the final innings.

Post-match refreshments were enjoyed courtesy of the King Alfred Pub, and Ben and Graham shared their winners’ prize, a barrel of Saxon Bronze from Alfred’s Brewery Winchester, with fellow cricketers and spectators.

Chair of Hyde900, Steve Marper said “We are glad to have added another sporting event to our repertoire, alongside the long standing Wantage to Winchester Cycle Ride which takes place on July 19th this year. For the future, we hope to maybe join with organisers of the King Alfred Trophy match first played at last year’s Grand Day Out, and hold a single, and perhaps larger Hyde event”.

Hyde900 would like to thank the King Alfred Pub, and Alfred’s Brewery Winchester, for support in staging this event.
