Friday October 22nd – Sunday October 24th@ St. Bartholomew’s Church, King Alfred Place, Winchester SO23 7DNHyde900’s annual KING ALFRED Weekend, held close to the anniversary of King Alfred’s death on October 26 899 AD, brings together events and activities which celebrate the rich and varied story – both historical and contemporary – of the Hyde area of Winchester, where King Alfred was buried in Hyde Abbey in 1110. This year we are focussing on our recent 2021 dig, the latest in a line of hugely successful and popular events, led by David Spurling. To date finds have included medieval glass of ‘extraordinary quality’ and carved sections of this great abbey of ‘international significance’. It is extraordinary to realise that present residents walk, plant gardens and build homes upon such a rich and unique heritage. The weekend will start with a lecture by Prof Martin Biddle. Professor Biddle will deliver a talk entitled’ Eureka Moments’ which will encapsulate his most memorable moments during his many years as an eminent archaeologist. This talk will be introduced with a short summary by David Spurling of the 2021 dig, highs and lows! We hope that you will come along to learn and enjoy these insights into Hyde’s heritage and share a glass of wine at the end and have a closer look at some of the finds. We also have two vital sessions on the Saturday looking to the future of Hyde900 and Hyde’s rich heritage and an Open forum discussion involving local councillors for which YOUR input is really needed.
