2023 Community Dig – Preparations

datePosted on 09:08, August 26th, 2023 by Website Admin

Over the 24th & 25th August 2023, preparations began in the back gardens of Hyde residents. We dismantled the shed at #8 (saving the tomatoes of course) and prepped the ground for the imminent digging.

Booking for the 2023 Community Dig now OPEN

Hyde, Winchester August 26 to 29!

Hyde900 will once again be putting on their annual community dig on the site of Hyde Abbey, the last known resting place of Alfred the Great. Previous digs have uncovered the remains of the church and cloisters in the gardens of willing residents, who live in what was the Inner Close of the abbey. Finds include many materials from the construction of the abbey, which was largely destroyed following the Dissolution of the Monasteries. This year we hope to uncover more of the abbey buildings as well as a continuation of the 12th century culvert that was the highlight of  last year’s dig.

The dig is open to all, aged 5 and upwards , who can take part in 2-hour session ( Please note that children  need to be accompanied by a responsible adult). Early application is strongly advised as demand for places is likely to be high.
