“My aim is to make stones interesting!” said David Spurling to a packed Hyde Parish Hall in late April. A tough challenge, you might think? But not really. David, who lives in Headbourne Worthy, is passionate about the stones from Hyde Abbey. He hunts them down with the true spirit of the adventurer, climbing ladders, peering into foundations and getting his hands dirty in rescuing them from the bowels of skips.

Hyde Literary Summer Evenings

In place of the regular Third Thursday BYO LIt Nights over the summer the Literature


Group will be heading out and about in Hyde and beyond.

Details of the three events planned so far are below.

3 July – Clowns & Jesters (outdoor event on eve of Hat Fair)

Cathedral Grounds. Time tbc. A lighthearted evening’s entertainment. Bring a story, poem or piece to share and enjoy on the eve of the Hat Fair.

17 July –Journeying around Hyde

Meet at 19.00 at the Hyde Tavern for a19.30 start.

Bring sensible shoes and short pieces inspired by journeys

 to share on an evening walk.

21 August – Summer Poetry

Hyde Gate is the venue for an evening of Summer Poetry. Bring your own or a favourite poet’s work to share in this atmospheric setting.

Also bring a cushion! Get there for 19.30 when the gates will be opened…

Michaelmas Music Concert Series 2012

The third annual series of Autumn concerts in memory of the musical traditions of Hyde Abbey, final burial place of King Alfred the Great, will be held in St Bartholomew’s Church, King Alfred Place, Hyde. Doors open 7.00pm. Performances commence at 7.30pm

Tickets for all concerts are £7.00,  Hyde900 members £6.00, under-12’s free.
