Largest ever field for the Wantage to Winchester Cycle Ride 2015Posted on 21:42, July 21st, 2015 by steve
Sunday morning 19th July saw the largest ever number of cyclists leaving the King Alfred statue in Wantage following a warm send off by the Mayor, Cllr St John Dickson, and a loud “Oyez! Oyez!”, and ring of his bell by the Town Crier. The riders enjoyed the dry and sunny conditions, though were less pleased with the strong head winds, as they made their way first west, then south along the excellent route through the beautiful countryside of rural Oxfordshire, Berkshire and Hampshire, before entering Winchester from Kings Worthy via Hyde. Ben and Graham victory in the first Hyde900 Cricket competition.Posted on 12:56, June 29th, 2015 by steve
The first Hyde900 cricket competition, a pairs event on 28th June, saw Ben Robbins of the King Alfred Pub and Graham Barrett of Monks Road triumph with a score of 50 after 70 runs and 2 outs. Start of play on the North Walls Recreation Ground pitch was delayed slightly by morning rain but brisk competition was soon underway between batsman pairs drawn from the renowned Scrummagers Team, and King Alfred Pub Eleven. A tense finish saw Ben and Graham grasp victory in the final innings. Post-match refreshments were enjoyed courtesy of the King Alfred Pub, and Ben and Graham shared their winners’ prize, a barrel of Saxon Bronze from Alfred’s Brewery Winchester, with fellow cricketers and spectators. Chair of Hyde900, Steve Marper said “We are glad to have added another sporting event to our repertoire, alongside the long standing Wantage to Winchester Cycle Ride which takes place on July 19th this year. For the future, we hope to maybe join with organisers of the King Alfred Trophy match first played at last year’s Grand Day Out, and hold a single, and perhaps larger Hyde event”. Hyde900 would like to thank the King Alfred Pub, and Alfred’s Brewery Winchester, for support in staging this event. Wantage to Winchester King Alfred Cycle Ride 2014Posted on 10:50, July 28th, 2014 by steve
Mayor of Wantage Councillor Fiona Riper, accompanied by the Town Crier, sounded the starting horn on 20th July for the 7th annual Wantage to Winchester Cycle Ride. Over 100 riders followed the outstandingly beautiful route devised by Hyde resident Andy Key. Leaving Wantage westwards they later turned south to climb Blowing Stone Hill, named after the rock at its foot where Alfred the Great is said to have rallied his troops. A refreshment stop while riders admired the panoramic views from Combe Gibbet was followed by a sunlit run back to Winchester through the picturesque villages of the Bourne valley. This year’s route ended in Hyde Abbey Garden where the first riders home were welcomed by the Mayor of Winchester, Councillor Eileen Berry, with Friends of Hyde Abbey Garden on hand to explain the history of the area to new visitors. The 53 mile ride celebrates King Alfred the Great (849-899) who first brought together the territory that became modern England. He was born in Wantage where a commemorative statue in the market place was the start of the ride. This year’s finishing point, Hyde Abbey Garden, is on the site of Alfred’s burial place in the now vanished Hyde Abbey, once among the most prominent in England, and featured in the January 2014 BBC2 documentary The Search for Alfred the Great, in which Hyde900 took part. Hyde900 programme for 2014 launched.Posted on 17:34, March 8th, 2014 by steve
Hyde900 members and their guests enjoyed a preview of the plans for 2014 at a private launch event for the new year’s programme held in the clubhouse of Winchester City Football Club last Friday, March 28th. Hyde900 founder Edward Fennell and Visual Arts Coordinator Sophie Cunningham-Dawe spoke of their personal experiences working on the BBC2 documentary “The Search for Alfred the Great” broadcast in January which focused on the mystery of the Unmarked Grave in the churchyard of St Bartholomew, Hyde. They described their feelings about the extraordinary results that were revealed, and as members of a small community organisation working so closely with the nation’s foremost broadcaster. Much of the following question and answer session inevitably focussed on what might now follow in relation to the site of the royal burials , about which there are understandably differing views.
