How Bad was the Hyde Bridewell?

27 Oct 2019, 2:45 pm - 4:00 pm

Location: Hyde Parish Hall

KAW2019_talkA talk by Dr Helen Paul of the University of Southampton
2.45 pm, Hyde Parish Hall

Hyde900 volunteers have uncovered a great deal of information about the Hyde Bridewell, the prison which stood on the Abbey site between 1788 and 1849. It appears to have been a miserable place to end up. However, how bad was it in comparison to the alternatives? There were other Bridewells and gaols. There were also institutions which were not supposed to be punitive, like poor houses. That did not always mean that their inmates (who were merely poor) were better treated than the criminals and debtors in the Bridewell. This talk will try to put Hyde Bridewell into a larger context of institutional ‘care’.

Tickets £5 (£4 for Hyde900 members, Under 16s free)
